EAST VALLEY HISTORY

Much of the East Valley was settled in the late 1800’s by Mormon Pioneers. The first pioneers settled the Mesa area in 1877 and cooperated with the Pima and Maricopa Native Americans living in the area to cultivate and farm the rich soil next to the Salt River in what became the “Lehi” area of northern Mesa. The name “Mesa” came from the second group of pioneers that arrived in 1878 and settled up on higher ground, on the mesa.

Gilbert began as a farming community fueled by rail service and became known as the, “Alfalfa Hay Shipping Capital of the World”. William “Bobby” Gilbert provided the initial land for what would become the incorporated town of Gilbert that remained largely agricultural until the late 1920s. Gilbert is now the most populous incorporated town in the United States with nearly 230,000 residents and is known as one of the most family-friendly towns in America.
